James Neilson (LL.B)

James Neilson is a Partner in the firm's Advisory Group.

James was admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1984 and the High Court of Australia in 1985. He is registered with the Queensland Law Society as an approved mediator. He joined the firm as a full time consultant in January 1999 after 5 years as a partner at a Brisbane based commercial law firm. James became a Partner at King & Company on 1 July 2004.

He brings to the firm a wealth of experience in the fields of commercial and property law, town planning and environmental law, franchising and intellectual property law and finance and securities law.

Since joining the firm James has provided advice and documentation to Council and non Council clients of the firm in various commercial transactions including: -

  • property development and joint ventures;
  • industrial, commercial and retail property leasing;
  • local government tendering and contracts;
  • construction contracts, consultancy agreements and contract administration;
  • intellectual property commercialisation, licensing and protection;
  • local government infrastructure development;
  • finance and securities; and
  • transaction structuring in corporate, partnership and incorporated association scenarios.

He was heavily involved in the local law review process completed in June 1999 and has extensive experience in drafting local laws, subordinate local laws, amending local laws and the preparation of associated public consultation documents, gazette notices, public interest test plans and public interest test reports.

James has been appointed to the Federal Attorney General’s Native Title Practitioners Panel and regularly provides advice and documentation for use by local government clients of the firm particularly in relation to resumption of native title rights and interests, validation of future acts and native title determination proceedings before the Federal Court of Australia.
