Terry Law, Partner

Qualifications:

LLB, GDLP; Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland; Solicitor of the High Court of Australia.

Experience:

Terry is a partner in the firm's Planning & Environment Group and has been a legal practitioner since 2002. Terry worked in the Queensland Government's Crown Law office before joining King & Company in February 2008.

He has acted for numerous Queensland Government departments and agencies, local governments, developers and landowners in planning, environmental, compliance and compulsory acquisition litigation.

Terry regularly conducts litigation in the Planning and Environment Court.  His experience also includes prosecutions in the Magistrates Court and disputes before the Land Court, Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and High Court of Australia, as well as the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales.  He was a member of the Queensland Government’s Planning Reform Dispute Resolution Focus Group, which provided expert input on Queensland’s current planning legislation.

Terry's primary focus at the firm is to undertake Planning and Environment work and general compliance and prosecution work for our local government clients.  He has been partner of the firm since 2 July 2012.

Significant matters Terry has worked on include:

  • acting for the Department of Transport and Main Roads in the High Court of Australia regarding a claim for compensation following the resumption of land for a road widening project on the Gold Coast;
  • acting for a large central Queensland council in enforcement proceedings in the Planning and Environment Court concerning the unlawful use of residential land, which resulted in a three-month custodial sentence for the offender; and
  • acting for residents in Camp Hill to successfully overturn a Brisbane City Council decision to approve a large apartment building in their street.

Terry holds a current practising certificate from the Queensland Law Society and is a member of the Queensland Environmental Law Association and an associate member of the Planning Institute of Australia - Queensland Division.  Terry chairs King & Company’s Events Committee.
